Eagle watching at Bellevue Dam

Every year the American Bald Eagles comes to the Mississippi River Valley to nest and raised their young. They arrived around November in large numbers and you can observed them so close you could almost touch them. The best place to see them during the winter when the Mississippi river is frozen is by the Bellevue Dam in Iowa. It's just about 20 to 30 minutes drive from the Commander's House. Our guest would cross over to Iowa going west on Hwy 64 just north of Savanna in the morning, stop at the Island Restaurant in Sabula ( Sabula claims to be the only Island in Iowa) for a hearty pancake and sausage breakfast. From Hwy 64 take Hwy 67 going north to Bellevue. The dam is right in the middle of town and you cannot miss it. As you are turning on to the dam, take a look up at the trees in the park. Usually there will be a couple of Eagles perched on the trees.
These pictures were taken a few weeks ago at the Bellevue Dam. After being out there for a while, you can get cold. But don't worry, help is near. There is a wonderful place in town call the Happy Beans and they serve a wonderful hot drinks and pastry. You can warm up in comfort. Just tell them that the Commander sent you.

The Commander's House is your destination for Rest and Relaxation.

Welcome to the Commander's House. This 1918 Historic House was the residence of the base commanders of the Savanna Army Depot from 1918 to 2000 when the base was finally closed. Now you can be the commander for a weekend or a week for Rest and Relaxation. Bring your own troop. Plenty of space to accommodate up to 10 people. The house is located in the Hill complex of the old Savanna Army Depot overlooking the Mississippi River on the south and the Apple River on the East.
